Speaker: Dr. Christopher Burke, PE, PMP, Program Design Manager, Moynihan Station Program
Topic: “Moynihan Station: Phase 1 Construction Progress Report”Dr. Burke will discuss the current on-going construction of the Moynihan Station Project and the challenges of building within the environment of Penn Station, while consistently maintaining the safety and reliability of one of the most concentrated railroad operations in the world. This is being accomplished through creative scheduling of work and innovative approaches to construction, in continuous coordination with the railroads’ operating and engineering teams. The Phase 1 construction now in progress will create a forty-foot-wide concourse above the Penn Station platforms below the Farley Building, providing west-end passenger access between trains on tracks 5 through 21 and existing Penn Station concourses and, ultimately, access to the new Amtrak Moynihan Station concourse. To avoid compromising train operations and passenger circulation for Amtrak, Long Island RailRoad and NJ Transit, much of Phase 1 work is being performed during limited intervals on weekends and during midnight hours in precisely defined locations along tracks and boarding platforms. These and other factors unique to Penn Station make Phase 1 the most complex stage of Moynihan Station construction. Dr. Burke will provide some insight about working with these unusual restrictions at an extremely atypical construction site, while managing to be currently on schedule to achieve the designated completion date of August, 2016.
