This Week: Recycle-a-Bike Benefit, Better 125th Street Buses

Streetsblog founding editor Aaron Naparstek, a fellow at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning, will speak in Cambridge this evening ^[1] on the worldwide road death epidemic, and “the critical role that urban planners and designers must play in stopping the carnage.” Today’s event begins at 6 p.m.

Also on the calendar this week:

Today: At a public workshop tonight, DOT will discuss the results of a September workshop on bus improvements for 125th Street ^[2], the results of a survey of local shoppers, and will outline next steps. 6 p.m.
Today: Recycle-A-Bicycle holds its 18th birthday party ^[3], which will raise funds for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, including delivering and repairing bicycles for people hit by the storm. The party will honor Jon Orcutt, NYC DOT policy director, and Carolyn Szczepanski, director of communications for the League of American Bicyclists. RSVP requested ^[4]. 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday: DOT will present on the Kips Bay Public Plaza, which had a three-month trial this summer ^[5], to the transportation committee of Manhattan Community Board 6 ^[6]. 7 p.m.
Tuesday: The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects will host a forum on the future of light rail ^[7]. 6 p.m.
Tuesday: Ben Kabak of Second Avenue Sagas will speak with Thomas Abdallah, New York City Transit chief environmental engineer, and MTA Bridges and Tunnels President James Ferrara in a special “Problem Solvers” discussion ^[8] focusing on Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath. 6:30 p.m. RSVP requested.
