This Week: CB 4 Considers Extending West Side Bike Lanes to 59th
Posted By Streetsblog On September 19, 2011 @ 11:55 am In Livable Streets Events | 5 Comments
This week brings big news for cyclists and pedestrians on Manhattan’s west side. On Wednesday, DOT will present plans to extend the Eighth and Ninth Avenue bike lanes north all the way to 59th Street. Right now, the Ninth Avenue protected lane begins at 30th Street while the Eighth Avenue lane switches from a protected lane to a painted lane at 34th Street. If upgraded to protected lanes, the redesign will bring safer walking and cycling past the Lincoln Tunnel and the Port Authority, through Midtown and the theater district, straight up to Columbus Circle.
In addition to the following events from the Streetsblog calendar, you can catch bike-share demonstrations at Bowling Green and at Brooklyn Flea this week.
Tonight: Manhattan Community Board 6’s transportation committee gets an update on the pop-up café program and discusses Baruch College’s proposal to turn a block of 25th Street into an open pedestrian plaza. 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday: Elected officials host the final public forum for East Siders to weigh in on plans to close the Midtown gap in the East River greenway. 5:00 p.m.

Friday: UMass Professor John Collura offers a morning seminar on transportation finance, evaluating a number of options for funding infrastructure as gas tax revenues continue to fall short. 9:30 a.m.
