this ''march'' was led by local councilman danny dromm's chief of staff, who lives on the street where ths park is located. talk about your ''astroturf'' coommunity movement. . . total bs, undeserving of consideration

abc, without a community board having monthly open meetings, even praiseworthy changes like this would have been accomplished through closed door deals, with the players being the electeds, the bureaucrats, and a select group of citizens.

Community boards can be hidebound, obstructionist, and parochial. But they mean an open record, public meetings, and the opportunity - not always seized - for the average joe to have his voice heard. I would prefer that to a collaboration of insiders any day.

This is good news. I am familiar with JH and open space is a major gap in the long list of amenities the area enjoys. This is a fight that needs to be taken up by people all over the city, particularly in the vast park-less districts of Brooklyn. If we want kids to spend less time staring at LCD screens, we need to get busy opening up more space for them. They are our most precious resource, right?

Basically the neighborhood's citizens got four agencies in the city government and its entire delegation of elected officials to sign on to this proposal. They collectively asked the Community Board not to stand in the way. I'm grateful the Community Board eventually came around and listened. But the real kudos goes to the citizens, politicians, and bureaucrats who lead the way.

We bash community boards a lot on this site. But without them, where would this group have marched? Who would have heard their protest? And what body would have been free to agree with their position?

We need a body to hear these hyperlocal issues, deliberate publicly on them, and reach a community-supported consensus. Community boards are the best we've got, and without them, we would have politicians and bureaucrats....not citizens.

Great news! Congratulations to all the people who turned out and made this campaign a success--it will make your time spent hanging out there this summer that much sweeter!
