Note that the version of the crashStat map shown in the post uses a filter in which an intersection with fewer than 15 crashes shows as clear. While it's helpful to see where "hot spots" are with a map like this, it would be a mistake to conclude from the map that 5th and Park Avenue are largely crash-free.

As for the hit-and-runs with the suspects still at large, if and when they are caught it will be important to see if they were driving without valid licenses. Research indicates that drivers without valid licenses are 60+ times more likely to run from the scene of a crash than those with valid licenses. One of the reasons we need to make a felony of injuring another while driving without a valid license.

I guess what I'm saying is that there were actually 4 deaths this week, 31 this year, even though one of them didn't get that much media attention.

The print edition of the Monday, March 8, Daily News, p. 13, has a gruesome photo of a wrecked car, and it reports:

Calvin Camille, 20, of Rosedale, Queens, died when he ran a red light on Avenue D in East Flatbush and smashed his Honda into another vehicle, injuring three others, including a pedestrian, police said. Camille was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.

I can't find this article on the Daily News website, but maybe if anyone has an account with PressDisplay.com you can view the get the article there.
