What happens if you find 49 other buddies? Are we going to be arrested for social networking safety parades?

Sorry, Caroline, but if I wanted to share my commute with my neighbors, I'd take the bus. <a href="http://www.streetsblog.org/2009/11/11/a-safer-carmine-street-break-out-the-pitchforks/comment-page-1/#comment-154021" rel="nofollow">I can just imagine the arguments over which route to take.</a>

Wow, of all of the ways to perpetuate certain stereotypes of cycling culture, I think the name "Bike Buddy" takes the cake...

Seriously, though, good idea!

A few of questions.

Will this be static -- ie. find people who generally commute on this route at this time as a one-time match -- or dynamic -- find people who are commuting at this very time on this very route today?

If the latter, will it be available on cellphones (not to me but to those who use them) or just computers?

Will it be two points, or more than two -- able to identify people who could join en route -- with a phone link for a call when someone is nearby?

I once proposed something similar, but for carpools, with riders paying drivers the equivalent of a transit fee plus a fee to the link provider for point to point service. Here, of course, there would be no motor vehicle cost to offset.
