New York, NY (March 1, 2010) - - On Friday, March 19th, a group of cyclist performers, the “Bureau of Organized Bikelane Safety”, B*O*O*B*S team, will ride through the bike lanes of Midtown Manhattan enforcing the traffic laws disregarded by motorists parked in the bike lane. Dressed in protective gear and masks to carefully remove the motor vehicles polluting the lanes, the B*O*O*B*S team will draw attention to NYPD’s over policing of cyclists instead of focusing their enforcement efforts on the real danger on the streets--reckless drivers whose actions killed 320 New Yorkers in 2008.
“The B*O*O*B*S ride will point out the absurdity of the NYPD spending millions of taxpayers’ money to follow around small groups of cyclists and creating rules to discourage law-abiding cyclists from safely riding together,” explains, Barbara Ross, member of the Time's Up! cyclist performers.
“If the NYPD was really worried about safety, they would enforce the laws around the bike lanes. Yet, cars which park there get a free pass. The NYPD picks and chooses which traffic laws it want to enforce,” explains Benjamin Shepard, member of the Time's Up! cyclist performers. “As we ride, we’ll highlight the need for real enforcement of the traffic laws, and not harassment of group bicycle rides. With all these MTA budget cuts, more and more people are going to be choosing to ride. We think it should be safe.”
