"Greening" the city began a century ago when garden suburb principles (we would call it today, the new urbanism) melded the garden with the city to produce walkable planned neighborhoods complete with clubhouses, sports facilities, parks, gardens and greenery. All centered on a village "downtown" for shopping and theaters and mass transit for quick trips to "the city". If we had followed these examples of urban development, Americans today wouldn't be spending half their lives in traffic jams, parking lots and gas stations. We'll take a look at Forest Hills Gardens (1910), Jackson Heights (1910), Douglaston (1910) and Sunnyside Gardens (1926).
