Actually, Larry, the idea of taking a perfectly good railroad bridge across a river that desperately needs more train crossings and turning it into a pedestrian and bike walkway is not anything I'm going to be celebrating. Furthermore, cultivating a new constituency that will actively oppose any attempt to reactivate train service across the bridge is pretty lousy.

Also, CB7 transportation committee on the Upper West Side is having a meeting tomorrow and bike lanes are #2 on the agenda. DOT Manhattan Borough Commissioner Margaret Forgione, and DOT Coordinator of Bike Programs Josh Benson will be there. This is a pretty big deal.

At the meeting last Tuesday regarding the West Side Manhattan Transportation Study, Forgione said that DOT is looking to build out the bike master plan in the UWS and is looking for direction from CB7. This is the time to go and speak up for protected lanes on Columbus, Amsterdam, and Broadway. She said they were definitely open to ideas, including which avenues should even get lanes.

Don't forget the opening of the historic Poughkeepsie railroad bridge as a walkway and bikeway over the Hudson, a considerable achievement.
