In places like the US, women spend much more time in automobiles than men, primarily because they must drive so far between work, home, their child's school, their child's sports practice, the grocery store, the mall, etc. Single use zoning has put a strain on women that most men don't fully appreciate. Transit routes, especially suburban transit routes, prioritize commute trips (home to work and back) and are not responsive to the travel patterns of women.

More dense, mixed-use development can free women of the travel time in cars and also alow children to transport themselves by biking, walking, and taking transit. Most suburban moms, and dads who act as primary care givers, can tell you how much they dread being trapped inside the car as a chauffer. Maybe mom's free time could be a selling point for Safe Routes to School?

Except that women do not always feel safe in automobiles either. Walking to the last parking space at shopping center in the evening hours can spur the same fears as waiting at a bus stop.

All of this is a sobering reminder that for many women around the world, the simple right to go freely and fearlessly about their daily business remains compromised. How are we as a planet ever going to get anywhere as long as that remains the case?

Great argument for automobilism and automobiles. I can't wait until GM's ad agency gets wind of this one.
