More basement apartments means more less affluent, more transient neighbors, which many believe lowers property values. I appreciate Mr. Mathews' work with his blog, but I think he's reaching too far by connecting this issue to the supply of parking.

"Mathews points out that 20 percent of Georgetown residents don't own cars. He also notes that 23 percent of households own more than one car, and asks why the interests of the multi-car-owning residents should trump other concerns:"

To be fair, this is the interests of the multi-car-owning residents AND the interests of the single-car-owning residents that are being invoked here, not just the multi-car people. Still shouldn't trump people's ability to find a place to live, of course, but I think what they're balancing it against is the ability of the building owner to make an extra $X per month in rent rather than against the ability of some hypothetical future tenant to find a place to live.

If you "solve" traffic congestion by building more roads, you just make the parking problem worse. So, let's solve both problems at once. Make public transit free.
