Friends of the High Line is working with a group of community leaders, property owners, business owners, and residents to explore the creation of a special assessment district to cover $1 million of the annual $3.5 million- $4.5 million it will cost to maintain the High Line.

The proposed Improvement District will be created through a public process which is just beginning, and will include approval by the City Planning Commission, the Manhattan Borough President, and the City Council. A map of the proposed district [PDF] can be downloaded, and more information is available on our Web site. Additionally, The Villager ran a thorough article about the proposed District last week.

We will be seeking public input at two upcoming meetings. The meetings are open to everyone, but will be geared towards business owners, property owners, and tenants within the proposed district.
