I wish some would send that article to AAA as a suggested submission for its magazine, without mentioning the source. There is more than a little truth to it.

The best treatment of that theory, Larry, is still this gem from The Onion: Report: 98 Percent Of U.S. Commuters Favor Public Transportation For Others.

Bottom line: one of the major beneficiary of fewer people driving is drivers who are still on the road. While drivers might feel like sneering at people who walk, ride bicycles, and us mass transit, it is not in their interest to discourage them.

My car improves my quality of life but reduces everyone else's quality of life. But everyone else's car reduces my quality of life, whether I am walking, riding a bicycle, driving, or looking for a place to park. Even if the energy and pollution impacts of motor vehicles could be eliminated, that won't change.
