'Reinventing the Wheel' will begin with the moving and rarely screened experimental film 'FIETSEN; (Cyclists, 1965) by Dutch photographer Ed van der Elsken as he observes cyclists (and other means of transport) in Amsterdam, moving over the bridges on the canals.
A lively presentation will follow with transit experts from three New York organinzations: Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives will discuss, among other things "Biking Rules!" the first large-scale effort to promote civic-minding riding on NYC streets, and to untangle frequent friction between cyclists and pedestrians. Dani Simons, Director of Strategic Communication NYC Department of Transportation, will also present images of what the DOT has planned for our city, from SUMMER STREETS to pedestrianize plazas where one can lounge around Times Square. The evening will finish with a video presentation by Steve McMaster from Times Up! that will add another layer to our discussion of traffic, transport, and our right to public space and safe city streets.
Refreshments, shmoozing and a hightened sense of Bike Love will occur after the panel. Space is limited in the gallery so guests will be seated on a first come, first serve basis.
