So what were the results of the particulate test? “Inquiring minds want to know.”

I’ve only recently noticed that nowhere in NYC do we have the speed limit posted. Not being a driver I really don’t know what the limit is. Can someone tell me why it’s not posted? thanks.

Thanks for all of your comments! The particulate boards showed a high level of gray particulate matter, although the experiment at this school was compromised by all of the rain. We have done this study in a number of Avenue-located schools this year and are often shocked to see the high concentration of gray/black matter on the street side (we always do a control on a window or area in the back as comparison and they are usually white or slightly yellow). This really helps to show the kids the impact of cars on the immediate environment.

About Speed Limit signage: I don’t know what the logic is about speed limit signs although I know there are only a few signs on city streets – which really makes it hard for us to get control over school zone speeding! Only since I became the Director of LSE, have I known about this fact and I’ve lived here for almost 20 years. If you want to find a rare specimen, go to Columbus Avenue just north of 77th and there is one posted outside of the Museum. This of course was the point the kids were trying to make with their question to random New Yorkers on the street.
