Dr. Byron de Sousa was a dear sweet man, proof that one can be a leader, care, and yet do so in a thoughtful, peaceful manner. His passing was a real loss, but knowing him was an honor.

Mr. Koski is an asset I didn't even see coming- his addition to the City of Fort Worth's staff and help with greater bicycle safety and access is tremendous. I know these changes will take time, but I'm excited to see the likelihood of these changes and believe we've finally got forward momentum.

There are numerous positive changes happening in FW and its surrounding areas regarding bicycling and efforts to truely become intermodal and not just "Car Only" driven. Positive stuff!

In explaining the change, planner Koski said "When I came on board... I was immediately approached by the late Dr. Byron de Sousa – a community leader who had been Chair of the Fort Worth Plan Commission and was an avid proponent of bicycle transportation infrastructure – to develop a truly comprehensive bicycle transportation system plan encompassing infrastructure, education, encouragement, city policies and programs, and law enforcement."

I'd trade in NYC's current endless series of moist mornings for dry sunny days in the low 100s like Fort Worth has in a heartbeat. Last summer in Anbar Province, Iraq I was biking every day in 120-degree temps and it was fine.

IMHO, the "weather" argument against biking ("I can't bike to work because it's too hot/too cold/too rainy where I live) is basically a red herring. Even if a place has godawful weather some of the time, biking conditions are probably beautiful, or at least acceptable on most days. (I know that from experience, since I live in Wisconsin.)

My advice to novice bike commuters is to bike when it's comfortable. If the weather's OK, ride your bike to work. If it's snowing, or pouring rain, or like an oven outside, take the bus or the train, or -- if you have to -- drive. You'll still be biking most of the time, and you may find yourself biking more and more as you get used to it. But it's not an all-or-nothing proposition.

Thanks for the shout-out of Fort Worth's new bike plan. We're pretty excited about it - we did a pretty long post about the plan during the first round of public meetings not long ago:

By the way, that's not actually Main - that's Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards, to the north of Downtown. Here's the actual Main Street in Downtown:
