This Week in Livable Streets Events

There are scores of livable streets-related happenings in New York every month. Since not all of them get the attention they deserve, we'll be highlighting Streetsblog Calendar listings in a new Monday post. Here's a taste of what's going on in livable streets events this week.

  • Tuesday: Book talk and signing with Joanna Merwood-Salisbury, author of "Chicago 1890: The Skyscraper and the Modern City." Chicago’s first skyscrapers are famous for projecting the city’s modernity around the world. But what did they mean at home, to the Chicagoans who designed and built them, worked inside their walls, and gazed up at their façades? Answering this multifaceted question, "Chicago 1890" reveals that early skyscrapers offered hotly debated solutions to the city’s toughest problems and, in the process, fostered an urban culture that spread across the country. 6:30-8:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: "Biking Safely With Your Pooch" seminar. Jeannie Hughes, professional dog trainer, will discuss key comfort and safety tips to help cyclists enjoy their ride with their pooch. She will also demonstrate different options for transporting or biking with your dog. 6:30-8:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: PBS Broadcasts "Blueprint America: Road to the Future." Participants attending the "Pooch" seminar will want to rush to a TV, or set their DVRs, to catch Janette Sadik-Khan and Aaron Naparstek bringing livable streets to the masses on Channel 13. The program will also feature a segment on the Sheridan Expressway. 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: The week is capped off with a party for Ride the City in Brooklyn, which is definitely the place to be next weekend. Join the Ride the City team to celebrate the launch of a new version of the web site. 2:00-6:00 p.m.
  • There are also two "bike from work" events this week: Wednesday with the Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee and Thursday with Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. Stop by for snacks and socializing.
