@Ed, I agree with you except that normal cyclists should also be wearing helmets IMO.

Look forward to reading the book. But I wish they chose a more normal looking cyclist for the cover - people won't start cycling if they feel you have to 'special cycling clothing' -- shorts (are those lycra?) and a helmet and and clip in shoes. How about someone riding a city bike in normal clothes?
Also, I feel branding it as a revolution complete with la bandera rosa is a little off-putting to potential cyclists.

Sounds interesting. Where do things like Critical Mass fall in this critique? I am definitely a past participator but completely disenchanted by the state of public demonstration. Beyond the aspects of mental masturbation its has been effectively neutralized. Sure a conversation for another time but i am always curious to see how those things play into movements and their current incarnations.
I will definitly read this book. I am especially interested in the cities that are urban sprawl meccas and their cycling communities, especially compared to places like portland or new york.
Nice revie Jen Peterson.

In America, we spend more on dental research than traffic safety research.

Unfortunately, our inattention to bicylists' needs can sometimes lead to situations where that dental research comes in handy. That's what happened to my wife once.
