I'm sure I would disagree with a lot of Pat McCrory's politics, but he sure seems to get the whole transit and livable streets thing.

A great reminder that sensible, sustainable transportation planning is neither a liberal nor conservative issue.

"It's a shame that such basic tenets of urban design are just lost on 99% of Americans."

I think urban design, energy, transportation, and related issues should be part of high school civics, science, and social studies classes. No one should get a high school diploma without reading Kunstler, Duany, Jacobs.

A trip to Europe wouldn't hurt either. Once you see Amsterdam, Venice, Paris, Munich, Madrid, etc. -- that's when you just get urbanism. Expecting kids to make sensible decisions as future citizens without letting them see well-organized landscapes is like expecting them to spout Shakespeare when they've never gotten beyond Dick and Jane and Spot. See Dick drive!

Thanks for putting up this link on Streetsblog. I didn't get home on time last Friday to watch this episode of Now and afterward, I just forgot about it.

While perusing Streetsblog, waiting for the rain to stop so I could ride my bike home without getting too wet, I took the time to watch this.

Excellent and superb but this is Urban Planning 101. It's a shame that such basic tenets of urban design are just lost on 99% of Americans.

watching this made be happy and sad at the same time.
while its refreshing and hopeful to see someone who "gets it", it pains me to see this opinion to be in such the minority, with the cards so stacked against similar development....why cant everyone think like this!

"Transit alone doesn't transform neighborhoods. The key is how you connect those neighborhoods to the train stations, with well-planned sidewalks that create a walkable community"

Word!

"if it’s estimated that just on infrastructure alone it would cost a couple trillion dollars to get our roads, bridges, sewer systems, et cetera, up to snuff, and we know we’re not going to have that money"

Oh, we have the money--we're just not spending it very wisely. I mean, we're supposed to be the "richest nation on earth" or something.
