This coming Monday, City Council will hold its first-ever hearing on the Bicycle Access Bill, Intro. 871. It has been a very long road to get here. Intro. 871 is a critical piece of legislation that would ensure bicycle access to large commercial buildings, enabling many thousands of New Yorkers to safely park their bicycle indoors if they choose to ride to work.
To make sure that City Council Members know that the time has come to pass this bill, we need your help. Nothing makes a stronger impression than live, in-person testimony. We need you, your friends, your coworkers and your employers to attend the hearing and speak out in favor of Intro. 871.
Surveys show that the absence of secure indoor bike parking is the number-one reason why New Yorkers who want to bike to work do not. And no wonder: some 70,000 bikes are stolen every year and less than 2% are recovered. The Bicycle Access Bill is T.A.'s biggest legislative challenge in 2008, and would make a huge victory for NYC's bike commuters.
If your council member happens to sit on the Transportation Committee, coming and telling them that "you are their constituent, you vote, and that you support this bill" is doubly important.
