The only problem with replacing parking meters with single pay stations is that it removes a good amount of bike parking. This should be mitigated by constructing bike racks where the meters used to be.

Boris is right, placard abuse in SF is incredible. Until the penalty for falsely using a handicap parking placard is increased, much of our downtown daytime parking will continue to be wasted on these scofflaws.

Broken newspaper -> broken website

@Boris: My understanding is that the paystations keep track of which spots have been paid for, so they'll know both how many cars are there and how many of them paid. What's more, they could pretty easily be set up to call a meter maid when freeloaders are just chilling in a spot without paying.

I can't wait until this is up and running :-)

Here's another one that flew under the radar in SF. The Board approved a $100/year fee on all new curb cuts (but this doesn't apply to the hundreds of thousands of existing curb cuts).

Of course, most people don't use their curb cuts for access to their garage (which is used for storage). They use it to guard their "personal" parking space in front of their curb cut. Hopefully the Muni Revenue Panel will consider this as a revenue source, as well as to increase on-street parking.

(The Examiner website is always broken)

I continue to believe that the repeated mocking of John Liu over that broken parking meter thing is ridiculous.

I wonder how non-paying parkers (those with special permits, loading/unloading, or waiting for a passenger) will affect the vacancy counts. If the technology actually counts spots, fewer spots will cause an unwarranted rise in prices (since some of the occupied spots are supposed to be available). If it counts payments, vacancy rates will be lower than what they are supposed to be.
