A much better proposal would be for a reality-based space race implementing -- here and now -- zero VMT vehicles rather than the legacy super-sized ones used in transport and transit to save many billions of dollars, energy, environment, and lives and make great sustainable transport available to the broadest spectrum of local and global populations; and prepare for a possible midcentury juggernaut of disruptive material science advances to include "smart materials" and the many which may likely be made possible by nanotechnology's ultra-light ultra-strong carbon nanotubes, graphene, etc . . . to provide lots and lots of fun!
