This weekend will be a jazz picnic with two amazing swing bands playing. One is a large 1920's style jazz band and the other faster swing with a smoking clarinet front man. Many people will be dressed up vintage, they'll be a pie contest, and a bunch more family friendly events.

You can bring your bikes on the ferry that goes there (again, free) and while it's a small island it's an amazing place to check out. Pack a lunch and a blanket (be warned - they check for alcohol) and come on down. CNN mentioned it on their front page this week and made mention to the one they had in June as well. Here's more info:

Jazz-Age Lawn Party and Festival on Governors Island

Saturday and Sunday, September 13th and 14th
10 am to 7 pm

Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra invites you join us on this hidden gem just off the southeastern tip of Manhattan, nestled in the heart of majestic New York Harbor.

Due to the past successes of our Jazz Age Lawn Party, our event has expanded to two annual weekend-long festivals - the first was this past June - and our next is September 13th and 14th.

Under a shady grove of centuries-old trees, caressed by fresh sea air, a sprawling green surrounded by historic officers’ quarters and 18th century naval ramparts becomes the setting for a true Gatsby affair. Widely anticipated by flappers, sporting gents and tiny tots alike, this event has been featured annually by The New York Times.

In addition to Michael Arenella’s 11-piece Dreamland Orchestra which plays both days, the acclaimed Boilermaker Jazz Band will be joining us on Sunday the 14th.

A wide array of music, activities, games and contests are open for all ages to enjoy:

- Charleston and Peabody Dance lessons with legends Roddy Caravella and Paul Grecki of Sandra Cameron Dance Center.

- Vintage ’78 records spun on a gorgeous 1920s Victor Credenza phonograph machine by Matthew Hinson (wait ‘til you see the horn on this thing!)

- 1920s Motorcar Exhibition - lucky game winners will get a spin around the island in a genuine rumbleseat; hold on to your hat!

- Vintage clothing dealers and boutique milliners, also to be announced soon, will be peddling wares, so be sure to tuck some cash into your garter.

- Croquet games hosted by The New York Croquet Club

- Horseshoe Toss

- Tug O’ War

- Pie Recipe Contest (Saturday Only)* - Categories: “Mom’s Best”, “Most Original”, and “Hobo’s Choice”. Special Prizes and coveted gift certificates to be awarded.
*Pre-registration required for the PIE event. To register, please email Sarah Liston: ladyliston@msn.com
