School bus routes eliminated in fiscal crisis; kids forced to walk.
“Health advocates long have encouraged students to walk, stressing the fitness benefits. But school and transportation officials say they fear that abruptly reducing bus service could lower attendance rates, increase traffic congestion, or endanger students if they cannot walk on sidewalks and crosswalks.”
“Major cuts loom in California, where schools are not required to provide transportation to campus. As a result, districts squeezed by fuel prices and fewer state dollars are trimming millions from transportation budgets.”
Money is going to drive everything for the next four years. The biggest argument for walking and riding bicycles will be cost.
You gotta love Addabbo. Fighting the fare hike, complaining about how the MTA under-serves his neighborhood. Yet running right through the heart of his neighborhood is the abandoned Rockaway Branch of the LIRR. Each time the MTA tried to run trains down that track to serve his constituents and utilize that valuable resource the neighbors, who previously bought their homes at reduced prices because they abutted the right of way, squash the proposals. Time and time again.
The politicians need the MTA to blame. Its a big agency, 60,000 employees, fully open to public scrutiny. It provides a gold mine of grievances for the aggressive politicians to pursue.
Great piece from CNN. It’s nice to see the media start to take the side of bicyclists! I’ve seen plenty of pro-bicycling editorials in the New Jersey papers as of late. Here’s a great example from the Asbury Park Press:
“This would have the biggest improvement to the quality of the public realm and to transportation funding of anything that could be done. We need a bold, visionary elected official who is willing to step up to the plate to push for this.”
