The Oil Drum's formidable Gail the Actuary on "Why isn't the price of gasoline even higher?" It hasn't come close to tracking the price of crude oil or other things derived from it like diesel fuel. The takeaway point for me was that refiners that can produce only gasoline, and not other oil-derived fuels, are seeing their profit margins shrink and therefore may experience a wave of financial failures. This could make life more, um, interesting for America's happy motorers.

Maybe Zipcar could go where city officials fear to tread and institute a bike share service along with their car share service?

ZipCars equipped with fold-up bikes in the trunks would be awesome!

re: Zipcar to Promote 'Low-Car Diet' This Summer (MTR)

Even better, if people used the bikes instead of the cars.

High gas prices benefitting auto insurance companies, and fewer miles driven means fewer accidents.

Re: "Drivers feeling shunned by D.C."

'The District is moving toward becoming "the most anti-car city in the country," said John Townsend, a spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic. "They see commuters as the enemy."'

As if commuters only commute by car.

"My guess is that it's a school safety thing. NYU doesn't want to see headlines like "NYU student attacked enroute on bus", because that would severely hit the all-important admissions numbers. That may be less of an issue now that the city is so much safer, but a school like NYU is always concerned with appearances."

Wow, cynical! I know NYU is a popular scapegoat around NYC, but they could ACTUALLY be concerned with safety, rather that just with appearances and admissions.

Re: DC's Transpo Policies Attract Ire of Suburban Car Commuters

"This is not about being anti-car, but increasing vehicles into the District is not a sustainable strategy for the city," said Emeka C. Moneme, director of the District Department of Transportation. "We want to encourage transit use, biking and walking."

Pretty awesome quote coming from the DOT. This also from a city with (from my limited perspective) less of a walking/transit/biking culture than NYC.

Re: "Congress Feeling Pressure for Action on Oil Prices"

"Senator Bob Casey, Democrat of Pennsylvania, heard it even closer to home, from his own teenager. 'My daughter said, "Dad, what are you going to do about gas prices?"' Mr. Casey said."

Oh gosh, the Congress could do so many things. How about subsidies, tax credits, or rebates for bicycle purchases/repairs and transit passes? How about issuing bonds for the construction and repair of a national rail network, local transit systems, and bicycle networks?

This is an excellent article for anyone designing a livable streets makeover or bicycling master plan in their community.

Re: "Why I Hate NYU Buses"

What *is* the rationale for NYU running a parallel private bus system limited to the NYU community? At least IKEA is filling a gap in a community underserved by transit and letting everyone ride it.

Anti idling devices should be written into NYC local law and include private vehicles.
