Unless you engineer the store so that it's highly inconvenient to drive (no parking) and reasonably convenient to get there by mass transit and get your big, heavy items delivered.

No matter where you put an Ikea, people will drive. That's what happens with stores that sell big, heavy items.

I was at the Memorial Ride for Asif, it was my first one and it was very moving. His mother and sister are very passionate about a bike lane on Queens Blvd. I know that we've been talking about it on the Queens Committee. It would be a huge undertaking but with a huge payout if it was done right.

Also in the same paper here is a link to an editorial about the bike lanes on Skillman Ave and acceptable losses by CB2 member Al Volpe. It's towards the bottom.

The traffic jams overwhelming Red Hook thanks to Ikea provide another depressing example of what happens when you plant a car-centric big box store in an urban neighborhood. Despite the shuttle buses and water taxis, the site seems engineered to encourage people to drive (a remote neighborhood with no nearby mass transit and a store with oceans of parking).

Did we know about this one?

<blockquote>
The city will close Bedford Avenue to traffic, turning the thoroughfare into a pedestrian-only plaza between Metropolitan Avenue and North Ninth Street.

Cars will still be able to cross Bedford on all the side streets, but each Bedford block will be traffic-free (that includes parked cars!) from noon to 7 pm on July 19, July 26, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9.

May I remind the reader that the MTA is facing a financial crisis despite the highest ridership in the era of mass automobile ownership, with subway ridership up 50% from the lows.

And the city and state are facing fiscal crises with just about the highest state and local tax burden in the country, as a share of income.
