Are you tired of:

  • Encountering double-parked cars?
  • Vehicles circling around looking for parking and polluting the neighborhood?
  • The lack of available on-street parking?

The New York City Department of Transportation is interested in piloting a Peak Rate Parking program with the goals of creating a more livable, safer, sustainable city for the future by reducing congestion and pollution.

What is Peak Rate Parking?

Peak Rate Parking (PRP) aims to increase the number of available parking spaces by discouraging motorists from staying longer than necessary when demand for parking is greatest.

How does PRP work?

With Peak Rate Parking, the parking meter rates will be higher during the busiest hours, and will be lower when the demand for parking is less. This will allow for more available parking spaces, less double-parking, and fewer motorists circling endlessly looking for a spot.

The pilot being considered will test:

  • If turnover at meters increase during peak periods
  • If double-parking decreases
  • If drivers “circle” less to find a space
  • If buses can pull to the curb more frequently

The proposed pilot would last for six months using existing meters. If the pilot does not achieve its goals, parking rates will return to normal. This initiative will only move forward with the approval of Community Board 2! Please join us to share your opinion.
