I love the sentiment, but if a pint (1/8 of a gallon) of Bud Light costs say $3 at a bar in NYC, I'm not sure I want to drink the beer that costs $4/gallon.

Glenn's idea is great but the numbers show it would be a safer society if the driving age was 25 or 26.

On average its seems that there is around 150 food calories in a 12 once beer (http://www.beer100.com/beercalories.htm). This comes out to about food 1600 calories per gallon of beer.

Biking at around 10 mph a 150lb person would need about 40 food calories to bike 1 mile. That means a person could bike 40 miles with the energy in one gallon of beer at an easy 10 mph!

FYI - A gallon of gas has the energy equivalent of about 31,000 food calories. That same person at that same speed could ride 775 miles on that same 31,000 food calories.

Cheers! But don't ride your bike immediately after drinking a gallon of beer. Riding while intoxicated is way not cool.

Investment banker Matt Simmons, a well-known figure in peak-oil circles, has often said that crude oil is cheaper than bottled water. In this interview he calculated it this way: "$65 a barrel translates to 10 cents a cup. Ten times cheaper than bottled water." At $139 a barrel, now it's four or five times cheaper than bottled water. Salut.

I've long thought (since I was a non-driving and heavy drinking college student) that the real way to curb drinking and driving would be to have 18-year-olds make a choice they would have to live with until they were 21:

A. Driving license specifically forbidding them to buy alcohol

B. A non-driving ID that forbids driving but does allow them to buy alcohol

Think of the radical change this would have on coming of age in America - I bet the cool kids would walk, bike or take mass transit to the bar...
