Extreme weather and climate events can take a direct toll of life, as witnessed in Darfur, New Orleans and most recently, Myanmar (Burma). Understanding how natural disasters turn into human catastrophes may give us the opportunity to improve the protection of vulnerable populations and aid recovery.
