I wanted to give everyone an update. Firstly thanks for your encouraging words. Secondly, it appears that American Express will credit the cost of the bike back to my account. I'm still going through their process (need to provide them with a copy of the police report) but the people I have spoken to have indicated that because I took reasonable measures to guard against theft it will be covered under their "purchase protection" program. Hopefully this story will have a happy ending. Thanks again everyone for cheering me up when I was feeling pretty blue about this.

Rob, Apartment insurance might also cover bike theft and may be something worth thinking about. You can get a lot of coverage for a very small fee. I believe insurance companies are required by law to provide it.

Everyone, besides good bike locking, please remember to record the serial number of your bicycle.

Rob (and Jason), it's *not your fault* that someone else stole your bike--it's the thief's fault. I'm sorry we live in a place and time where we have to go through such extensive precautions to protect our bicycles, and even then it may not be enough.

Damn!

Get another bike. Fast. Even if you have to buy a cheapo one.

Did they leave behind the chains? Were they cut?

Rob, I am so sorry about your bike. I know exactly how you feel, my bike was stolen a few years ago (it was really my fault) and I was surprisingly depressed. I didn't even like the bike that much but it really upset me.

The only thing that will make the pain go away is another bike.

Thanks Urbanis. I'm still coming to terms with the fact that my bike is really gone. I'm going to file a police report and monitor ebay and craigslist as well as inform used bike shops but I really don't hold out much hope. The whole situation just really, really sucks. I can't stop blaming myself (why didn't I fold it up and take it inside?!). Anyway I'm trying to decide if I want to go ahead and buy another as I really, really liked the bike and I'm trying to get in shape. Regardless, beware fellow streetsblogers.

I wish that film told me something I didn't know. I used a very thick steel cable as well as a u-lock. The cable wound through the seat, front and back wheels and frame. The U-Bolt clipped the frame to the post. The post itself is a thick steel bike rack firmly bolted into concrete. I have no idea how the thief stole the bike so quickly and in broad daylight on a busy avenue in front of my university which has security patrols; but they did. Now I'm a college student out close to $400 bucks and I'm heart broken.

Rob,

So sorry. That sucks.

I bought a $30 crapola bike at a tag sale that i use now about 60% of the time (esp. for trips under 5 miles)

If I ride any of my other three bikes (all priced around $500 to $900, I lock them up with 3 chains.)

Here is some advice from Hal & Kerri:

I am seriously bummed/pissed. My bike got stolen this afternoon. I had the bike for TWO DAYS! It was stolen within half an hour of me locking it up on 60th and columbus at 5 in the afternoon. I don't know what to do :( It was a fairly unique bike. The ironic thing is I bought a folder so I could take it with me inside but I figured since I would be back so quickly their wasn't a need to bring it in with me.

A bicycle is all they can afford.

This morning I asked my wife if she thought we were heading for an early-1990s-type economic train wreck or a 1930s-type economic train wreck. She mentioned the 1970s, and that's pretty bad!
