Firstly thanks for your encouraging words. Secondly, it appears that American Express will credit the cost of the bike back to my account. I'm still going through their process (need to provide them with a copy of the police report) but the people I have spoken to have indicated that because I took reasonable measures to guard against theft it will be covered under their "purchase protection" program. You can get a lot of coverage for a very small fee. I believe insurance companies are required by law to provide it. I used a very thick steel cable as well as a u-lock. The cable wound through the seat, front and back wheels and frame. The U-Bolt clipped the frame to the post. The post itself is a thick steel bike rack firmly bolted into concrete. I have no idea how the thief stole the bike so quickly and in broad daylight on a busy avenue in front of my university which has security patrols; but they did.
