Firstly thanks for your encouraging words. Secondly, it appears that American Express will credit the cost of the bike back to my account. I'm still going through their process (need to provide them with a copy of the police report) but the people I have spoken to have indicated that because I took reasonable measures to guard against theft it will be covered under their "purchase protection" program. You can get a lot of coverage for a very small fee. I believe insurance companies are required by law to provide it.
