I prefer the spelling &quot;liveable,&quot; and according to the OED I have Jane Austen and J.G. Lockhart on my side.  If you prefer &quot;livable&quot; (apparently following &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/Livable-Streets-Donald-Appleyard/dp/0520047699&quot; rel=&quot;nofollow&quot;&gt;Donald Appleyard&lt;/a&gt;), go ahead and use it, but you might want to register &quot;liveablestreets.org&quot;.</description>
