Well actually, the NYU buses will not be any less present in the upcoming years. NYU has a contract with the transportation company that will not change for a few years and are unable to change anything until then. The only thing that they are able to change are the types of buses they purchase, including cleaner running ones. Hopefully, by then, the bikeshare will be so prominent that it can be a large change.
I also support the suggestion about the metrocard, mta has been unwilling to give any kind of discount for students, so why would NYU go through that effort when the kids can just do it themselves if they live that far away?

Should start putting car-free zones around this city's universities, Columbia, CUNY, etc.

Since Columbia's Earth Institute keeps crowing about the IPCC Nobel Prize for many of its researchers, Wally Broecker's new book Fixing Climate, expansion and projected green building in West Harlem, etc.

CUNY with its University Transportation Resource Centers.

The NYU bus network should be dramatically reduced in the coming years as the university gives up its dorms in the Financial District - the huge 200 Water St and the nearby Cliff St dorm. Although NYU will probably continue to run buses between Washington Square and the Medical Center (1st Ave in the 30s), the buses will no longer run to the Financial District.

Why can't a Metrocard just be rolled into the $40,000 per year it costs to go to NYU? Who would notice? How many applications would they lose if the cost was say $41,000 and included a free unlimited Metrocard?

If this worthy project succeeds and grows, perhaps it could provoke a reappraisal of NYU's free but private bus service that contributes to traffic congestion and stress downtown. A helpful start would be a cost-benefit analysis of scrapping the service and funneling the money into financial support for monthly Metrocard passes for NYU students and personnel.
