When evaluating a train station, many may underestimate the critical role of circulation. Grand Central Terminal is justly famous for its beauty and remarkably efficient handling of large numbers of travelers and visitors. Penn Station, though it has lost its great McKim, Mead and White station structure, still retains the same circulation pattern that served the 1910 Pennsylvania Station. Despite the station’s importance, it is considered a confusing and crowded mess by most of its users. We will visit both stations, find out how they got the way they are, and explain how these vastly different results came about. Bring a MetroCard. Leader: David Koenig, historic preservation specialist, New Jersey Transit.
