The response to McCain's proposal is to say that when gas prices dip again, gas taxes will be increased to maintain the price, and gradually continue to do so until the share of taxes is more in line with our economic competitors (Europe and Japan).

Why doesn't he just propose eliminating all taxes and doubling spending?

Perhaps the Dems could propose eliminating the payroll tax for a year instead, and using some of that "trust fund" to pay for it.

Strong smart political move by McCain. It will work as far as bringing votes in and flushing out the Dems to agree. They both will.

Yeah, I came across a similar article today about letting your kids be more independent, only this time in the suburbs. Here's an excerpt:

"In 1972, 87 percent of children who lived within a mile of school walked or biked daily; today, just 13 percent of children get to school under their own power, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a significant parallel, before 1980, only 5 percent of children were obese; today that figure has tripled, says the CDC."

"Which scenario should provoke more panic: the possibility that your child might become one of the approximately 100 children who are kidnapped by strangers each year, or one of the country's 58 million overweight adults?"

"9 Y/O on Subway": Streets are liveable when kids can use them safely without an adult. So true. If only more parents could let go, like the author of this article, we'd swell the ranks of livable street advocates with parents.

How about this BS:

<a href="http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5g6OTvvWxmdp5Q2IvjYry89Ikh1YwD902A7U80" rel="nofollow">McCain Wants to Suspend Gas Tax for the Summer</a>

If the Dems don't try to stop this, they are not environmentalists.
