This is the Dutch/Northern Europe/Parisian system. After spending the last year in all three of those places, I can say that yes it works, and it is beautiful. And interesting to look at and experience.

I'm all for Plan B. But will we see ANY changes before JSK and the enlightened DOT are swept out by a new mayor?

The problem: Community Boards. They and their hearings are filled with neurotic, narrow-minded, self-interested property owners.

Plan B is great. Make it absolutely miserable to drive and absolutely a joy to walk, bike, or take the bus. Double the size of sidewalks. Add plants and cafe space. Take a lane or two more of traffic for buses and bikes. Allocate some of the leftover parking for commercial deliveries. What beautiful avenues we would have!

Thanks to the bike and ped advocates for being in favor of Plan A, which seemed like a good idea to me. In the past I haven't been in favor of regulation congestion by congestion due to the needs of deliveries and emergency access but...

I am now in favor of Plan B.

Post collapse, we'll need room for bikes and private vans to get around. Those too far out can telecommute, or work near where they live, at whatever wages are available there.

The middle class, those with parking placards, can squeeze into the remaining lane.

Hmm... that illustration looks a tad familiar. Looks like T.A.'s complete street blueprint is generating some buzz:
