The City actually pedestrianized Washington Place for a time in the early 1990s, after a car got out of control and plowed into a crowd of people on the east side of Washington Square Park, but the community NYU-haters turned it back because useless pavement and bleak streetscapes are so great for everyone.

If we can get the cities powerful institutions interested in pedestrianization, that's a great thing.

We should be very cautious about siding with NYU on stuff like this - if they had their say, they'd privatize the entire area. But pedestrianizing Washington Place (and why not Waverly?) east of the park would be great - I mean, it's already de facto pedestrianized during weekdays anyway.
