In my area a ship bumped a bridge and spilled a bunch of bunker fuel last year. I thought the photos in the paper of the damaged wildlife and ruined beaches was a good illustration of what we breath when the stuff isn't spilled.

I think this is the report you were thinking about: http://www.streetsblog.org/2007/07/27/dying-to-get-to-work/

It compares pollutant levels for those who drive, use public transit and walk.

This reminds me of reports I have previously seen in S'blog suggesting that deisel particulate intake was higher for motor vehicle occupants than for bicyclists proceeding amidst those motor vehicles. The explanation behind these reports, as I recall, is the relative lack of air circulation within motor vehicles and the fact that what new air motor vehicle occupants do get comes through air intakes at exhaust-pipe level. I vaguely remember someone posting a link to a peer-reviewed article supporting this hypothesis when I expressed doubts. Can the admins or others re-post those links, or offer others to support this point? Thanks.
