Dear Mr. Naparstek:
I want to make a report about riding bicycle in NY and I hope you can provide me the picture of a bicycle parking in front of the NY Times but I can't afford paying you. You will be credit of course.

This is so telling. A supposedly enlightened company like the Times builds a supposedly enlightened building that supposedly reflects concern for the environment. And they don't include a bike room? Unbelievable. There's a very big lesson here, although just what it is I have difficulty summing it up.

Just an update. I am a contractor who works at the New York Times Building several days a week. I have an ID for entering the building. But apparently, since there are ONLY 12 SPACES AVAILABLE, I was told that contractors will not be given bike passes.

Fleury,

The Times owns half the building, including the portion it occupies. Forest City Ratner owns the other half. The management of The Times controls both its office space and the editorial page. One and the same.

"The architect forgot to calculate the weight of the books!" story is an urban legend that's been told about shitty libraries all over the place. I don't think that's ever actually happened.

When I was in college at UMass in the late 80s, that "forgot to calculate the weight of the books" excuse was served up as to why bricks were raining down from our 22-story library. I can't believe that builders still make that mistake. I smell a rat.

The fact of the matter is bicycle acommodations were to be provided in the Cellar directly outside the freight elevator. The real question is, who value engineered the bicycle racks?

I also heard that the new New York Times Building, was supposed to have ample parking space for Bicycles. Passed on from someone in the building I heard, as stated above, that the building was supposed to have parking for bicycles in the basement and an upper floor library. So the Times denies that the problem is that Renzo Piano and company miscalculated the load bearing capacity of the upper floor and it wasn't built with sufficient support for the books? And denies that therefore, the library has been moved down to the basement where the bike parking was supposed to be?

So then is the problem that Ratner’s construction guys misread the plans?

Or is the problem that the Times didn’t ask for parking even though 40 bikes were regularly being parked in old Times buildings a number which should have been trending up?

It's a good thing Piano didn't make this mistake when building the addition for the Morgan Library. Of course, were the mistake to be repeated in designs for Columbia it shouldn't be a problem since they are proposing to build a giant seven story basement ("bathtub") that will go under most of the neighborhood they want to wipe out.

Both the New York Times site and Columbia's building, just like Atlantic Yards, make use of the legerdemain of forced private-to-private owner eminent domain effected by public agencies. Eminent Domain in the name of the “public good” but no bike parking and no green certification!

(Note, the Times partnered with both: 1.) Forest City Ratner builder of Atlantic Yards, and 2.) Renzo Piano architect for Columbia University’s West Harlem expansion.)

Maybe this story is about the just the obliviousness of the Times, but the points made about New York Times local city reporting in the comments are well taken- Without employees biking, the Time reporting will be less sensitive. And with the Times beholden on getting permits they are apt to have been a little soft on letting things pass- And then there is eminent domain which they should be reporting on- but they themselves made use of it. Atlantic Yards doesn’t get mentioned (for instance in the recent articles on Doctoroff’s departure) or covered as it should. And the Columbia expansion is a very big story which will need to be reported comprehensively.

So where should we go for our New York City news?

Re: 34-35
I haven't been in NYC in about 10 years, but are building owners as diligent about keeping the sidewalks clear of such potential hazards as (their tenants') sandwich boards and other advertising props?

To Fleury comment,
If I'm the primary tenant of a building and I'm paying you megabucks in rent, I would think that if I didn't like a minor building policy, you would change it at my request.

The Times DOES needs to have its feet held to the fire on this issue as well as the building management. If the Times' management really wanted the building management to change its bike policy, it would get changed. The only thing the Times needs to do is ask. The real question is, will they?

As for Fleury comment:
Interesting how the topic has shifted from "Phony 'Green' Architecture" to "Ha! The Times Ain't so Liberal After All!"
I made that point all the way back at 14.

Organize a critical mass to get the Times to change its errant ways? That's a great idea after it worked so well improving relations between cyclists and nypd, and showing how bicylists are traffic while blowing off every traffic law in the book, I'm sure it will work great at this too.

Interesting how the topic has shifted from "Phony 'Green' Architecture" to "Ha! The Times Ain't so Liberal After All!"
Do we need to say this? That the management of the building has nothing to do with the content of the newspaper? I thought that would be obvious.
The Times is partners with something called First New York (which may be part of Ratner) and as I understand it, they run the building. I'm fairly certain the editorial board doesn't get involved.
Times security, which has no choice but to enforce the rules, come off as professional to me, though I think the no-folding-bike policy is ridiculous, though.

It is heartening that many of the streetsblog people are waking up to the phony liberalism of the Times. These are the guys who give liberals a bad name.

How about a demo in front of their building, or originate a Critical Mass Rally there?

(Btw, am I the only one who thinks that #33, VDH, may be a snooty little Brit.)

When I worked at the National Cancer Institute (several years ago) the bike parking area in the garage was displaced by the smoking area. You can't make this stuff up.

After lots of complaining, a much smaller, less convenient bike parking area was provided, but smokers were given precedence over cyclists at an organization whose mission is the public health.

So this story doesn't surprise me.

Does that mean property owners have the right to clear the sidewalks of obstructions like newspaper boxes? Vendors? 3-card monte? Just curious.

Re: ddartley

By law, it is every building owner's responsibility to maintain the sidewalk in front of the building and 6 inches from the curb into the street. The building owner is required to keep the area clear of obstructions and safe for pedestrians. There is good reason for this law. Just think of when it snows. If building owners were not responsible for the sidewalk (technically the sidewalk is not the building owner's property), building owners would not have incentive to shovel snow off the sidewalk or keep the sidewalk clear to prevent slip and falls.

What is required to keep the sidewalks safe and whether chaining up bikes causes a hazard is up for debate.

I never thought I would ever see the day.

Someone in the US used "take" correctly instead of the universally misused "bring".

""I started taking my bike up the freight elevator..."

My faith in the NYT is restored.
