From Streetsblog's friends at the Stormwater Infrastructure Matters (SWIM) Coalition:
Stormwater is by no means solely a water matter. Good stormwater policy could:
- reduce street and subway flooding (as mentioned multiple times in the MTA's Aug 8 Flood Report
- reduce our urban heat island effect (making biking and walking more tolerable in the dog days of summer)
- increase vegetation (and keep the planned vegetation on 9th Avenue protected lane irrigated and green)
- improve water quality (thus making the greenbelts more scenic and bike/swim friendly)
Today the City Council Environmental Protection committee will hold hearings on three measures that would improve stormwater runoff policy.
Int 628 - By Council Members Gennaro, Brewer, Fidler, Gentile, James, Koppell, McMahon, Nelson, Palma, Recchia Jr., Reyna, Sanders Jr., Stewart and Weprin - A Local Law to amend the administration code of the city of New York, in relation to sustainable stormwater management, trees and vegetation.
Int 629 - By Council Members Gennaro, Brewer, Fidler, Gentile, James, Koppell, McMahon, Nelson, Palma, Recchia Jr., Reyna, Sanders Jr., Stewart and Weprin - A Local Law to amend the New York city charter, in relation to sustainable stormwater management standards for certain capital projects.
Int 630 - By Council Members Gennaro, Brewer, Fidler, Gentile, Gonzalez, James, Koppell, McMahon, Nelson, Recchia Jr., Reyna, Sanders Jr., Stewart and Weprin - A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the City of New York, in relation to developing and implementing a sustainable stormwater management plan.
