Transportation Alternatives will be holding a very special fundraiser to coincide with the Municipal Art Society's Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York exhibit. It will be an exclusive event hosted by livable streets luminaries.
Join us to celebrate Jane Jacobs and support Transportation Alternatives' growing campaigns to reclaim NYC streets.
Honorary Chair: Roberta Brandes Gratz
Roberta Brandez Gratz is an award-winning journalist and urban critic, lecturer and author of The Living City: Thinking Small in a Big Way, and Cities Back from the Edge: New Life for Downtown. She is an international lecturer on urban development issues and former reporter for the New York Post. As a longtime friend of Jane Jacobs, Ms. Gratz will speak about Jane's work and the relevance of her vision in Transportation Alternatives' current advocacy campaigns.
Featured Guest: Barry Benepe
Barry Benepe is the 2007 Jane Jacobs Medal winner, founder of Greenmarket, the largest farmer's market program in the United States and co-founder of Transportation Alternatives. An architect and planner by training, Barry Benepe's pioneering greenmarket program demonstrated how temporary markets could bring life back to the streets, creating community gathering places on empty lots and revitalizing neighborhoods and once under-used parks. In true Jacobsonian spirit, Mr. Benepe is an avid city cyclist.
Mr. Benepe's dedication to New York City has inspired many, including his son, Adrian, who serves as commissioner for the Department of Parks and Recreation.
