I thought this information about road diets from Parsons Brinkerhoff was really informative.

this is a video stream presentation (that actually doesn't have any presentation until 7 minutes 15 seconds in - just fast forward -- it's worth it)

I've read the handbook that is presented in the video stream. It's a great reference and quick read on the subject of road diets.

here's the slides from her presentation:

Good point d (#6)It's common to use hydrant spots as load/unload zones, and it's legal. No ticket if the motorist is in car, though this is interpreted to mean next to car and able to move it quickly.

Shoupista's idea is great, but what is stopping 9th Street residents from using the existing open spaces around fire hydrants for quick loading and unloading?

Most cops have no problem with someone using a hydrant space for a minute or so as long as someone stays with the car. On blocks in Park Slope, I've seen moving trucks, delivery vehicles, livery cabs, and residents park in these spaces while picking up or dropping off goods and passengers without getting a ticket.

Enough space for load/unload would probably be created if you metered one spot at midblock and at each corner on 9th Street. Somehow more than half the households in the city manage not to have cars, so surely the car-owning minority can some how figure out how to make do.

Just a clarification on DOT's commercial parking program, prices rise hourly, not every 15 minutes. (Incidentally, they just expanded it to Canal Street.)

From DOT
--------------------------------------
Rates for commercial vehicles are $2 for one hour, $5 for two hours, and $9 for three hours of parking for loading and unloading. In most of the commercial areas the hours are in effect from 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday.

I sent my fax (thanks, TA, for setting up the e-fax)!

Did I mention that it was on my way over to the CB6 committee meeting 2 weeks ago that I shot the video of me boucing off of the news trucks blocking the Tillary St. lane? (You can see it on StreetFilms: http://www.streetfilms.org/archives/how-do-i-make-a-streetfilm/ )

Great work, Aaron.

However, I'm not entirely sure about selling bike lanes by telling people they can just ignore them.
