Harry,

And capping their numbers will do this how?

What do you mean by "control"? How would you accomplish this? Pedicab drivers are asking for regulation, just not mindless regulation in order to quash competition.

Think about how reckless taxi drivers are? Where's your outrage towards them?

Pedicabs are out of control, especially in midtown. I don't know about the ones in front of the theaters, but they block sidewalks and go the wrong way on one-way streets. The owners may be trying to be responsible, but the drivers are not. They can whine about political deals, but they need to be brought under control.

I own and operate a pedalcab in Orlando, FL. After the four-day, 130,000-attendee Builders' Show at our huge Convention Center, I'm more interested in electric assist now (I'm 56 -and sore!)

Nice post and great press release. We operate a pedicab business in Denver and train new pedicab operators across North America. We're all watching what's going on in NYC. Fortunately, Denver has had regulations in place for years and have the support of the downtown business community when issues arise.

The main problem with the electric assist seems to be truth in advertising. I think most people think of pedicabs as entirely human-powered, and that's part of what they're paying for. All electric-assist pedicabs should have a notice that prospective customers can see before buying a ride. If they already do, then electric-assist should be legal.

It still seems lame, though. If the pedicabs require a heavy fiberglass shell to be safe, and that shell can't be pulled under full human power, then they're not really viable on the streets of New York.

Very well written Press Release. It shows that when people who try to work within the system get shut out, good ideas and logic seems to be shut out as well.

I highly recommend that folks contact your council member. Start with an email and then follow-up with a real live phone call. Ask for the person on the Councilmember's staff who works on transportation issues or environmental issues.

If you don't have their information close at hand, you can find it here:
