Not a joke, but an exercise designed to provoke a rethinking of how we use our street space, and to see if there's a more equitable arrangement. But yes, in a fun way.

Re: parking bikes on street vs. sidewalk:

I believe it is currently ILLEGAL for anything other than motorized vehicles to occupy on-street parking. This point came up in reference to the Park Slope Parking Spot Squat, where some jokers "parked" a small, plastic toy car in a parking space.

In response to #4/Preston - the 25 planned bike racks are in addition to others already installed nearby by DOT; they're not the only 25. Particularly, there's already a bunch of bike racks on N7 off Bedford, near the station.

Yes, the "cyclists would keep the space clean" probably wins the prize for the dumbest comment I've ever posted on streetsblog. But it comes from my firm belief that cyclists are good citizens.

Put those bike racks on the street, not the sidewalk!

25 Spaces is nothing. My experience suggests that available parking will generate trips. This holds true for bikes as well as cars. I suspect that the intersection already has 25 bikes on a normal day.

Perhaps the slow rollout will give time for this process to reveal itself allowing the city to be even more ambitious with it's parking infrastructure when the NW corner is built out.

There are some subway stairs in Chicago that take up too much room on the sidewalk. We would benefit from the taking over of a few on-street parking spaces for more sidewalk space (and with or without the addition of bike racks on this new sidewalk).

Once place I have in mind, for those Chicago readers, is the Grand/Milwaukee stop on the Blue line-O'hare.

the cyclists here definitely would not keep it clean whether there it is up on the curb or on the street. seriously. the only folks that keep our sidewalks clean are businesses and homeowners, because they will be ticketed if they don't.

Yes, yes, yes, put 'em on the street!

Like Aaron's pointed out, it should a lot cheaper, and heck, if street sweepers can't get in, I bet some of the cyclists themselves would help keep it clean. (Very easy for me to say since I don't live there--cough.)
