Also, why was he (Utt) quoted at all? His comments seemed pretty far removed from the core of the subject.
-USA Today consults with the right-wing Heritage Foundation in all of their reporting!

Also, isn't Utt's comment pure conjecture?

Are there any facts to back up his claim? I pass by the various "Chinatown Bus" stops pretty frequently (unsubsidized (and unregulated) businesses if there ever were any), and people are lined up around the block. Did he just want to insert some right-wing vitriol? It's what it sounded like to me.

People are willing to take a state subsidized train costing $65-100 rather than an "unsubsidized" bus, costing $15-20. What does this say about the attractiveness of buses as a form of intercity transportation?

The politics of our passenger rail system are tragic. USA Today is not known for in-depth reporting (even by 3rd grade reading level standards), but the short article on increased Amtrak ridership just had to include,

“Ronald Utt, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a think tank in Washington, D.C., says the increased ridership probably has more to do with Amtrak's continued use of taxpayer money to keep fares down on certain routes.
‘People are willing to take a state-subsidized train as opposed to an unsubsidized bus,’ Utt says.”

USA Today fails to mention that the Heritage Foundation is a conservative organization who believes America has a divine right to infinite motoring and flying. Motoring IS tax subsidized more than any other activity in the history of civilization. Roads, health costs, oil wars, free parking, etc.
