"If you rode down the street he would just point out cars. 'That's a Ford Navigator. That's a Honda,'" said his mother, Lorena Smith, of Amityville. The North Amityville boy was just 6 years old. Markus Duane Smith was born three months premature at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. The boy, who weighed 2 pounds at birth, spent the first 2 1/2 months in the hospital, his mother said. "He was a fighter from day one," she said. Glimpses of Markus' "kind and affectionate" personality were apparent in his earliest smiles as a baby, his mother said. The joy Markus took in being surrounded by people carried over to his first day at school. "He actually liked it from the very first day," his mother said. "Markus was like a social butterfly, especially with women." But the boy's first passion was of the four-wheeled persuasion. Markus had a collection of 400 miniature cars. Markus' mother said this coming Christmas was going to be all about "learning." Markus had already started a list filled with educational toys. "And he still wanted the Hummer," she said. In addition to his mother, Markus is survived by his father, Duane Knox; his sisters, Raven Smith, 16, and Sydni Smith, 12; and numerous aunts, uncles and other family members. Visiting will be 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Amityville Full Gospel Tabernacle on Brefni Street. A funeral will take place there 10 a.m. Monday, followed by burial in Pinelawn Memorial Park. The family will receive guests after the burial at the American Legion Hall on Dixon Avenue in Copiague. Donations to the Markus Smith Burial Fund can be made at any Bank of America branch.
