one night at 4 AM, cielo had just let its patrons outside after a long night of dancing. with nothing to do, the people milled around the cobblestone little w12th street wondering "what next"? the outlaw on coney island had been broken up.

suddenly, a van drives up and starts blasting music. hundreds of people begin dancing in the street wildly! a young couple dash off, produce four traffic cones and block off the street. the beats go on, driving the crowd to fete until they sweat.

eventually, the NYPD came. they didn't think it was very funny. :D

if that's not a good use of public space, i don't know what is.

Fun fact: this triangle was used by the 90's indie movie STONEWALL as a setting in which to recreate the title riot. This, after the actual Stonewall bar refused permission to film there.

this type of project is being proposed downtown in a much less overrun wedge of cobblestones called peck slip.

its currently a parking lot with a park in the proposal phase.

maybe if everyone on the community side shared notes accross neighborhoods we could turn the entire city into pedestrian/resident friendly piazzas in our lifetimes!!

DOT hopefully will change its slavish dedication to the car and begin changing street configurations to favor pedestrians. Hopefully.
