A 15 Year old girl was fatally struck by a driver suffering from sleep apnea who dozed off at the wheel, police said. Blanca Benitez 15, and her sister were walking on a sidewalk in Huntington at about 1pm Sunday when a Hummer driven by Gerald Taddonio, 55, jumped the curb and struck the girls, police said.

There is so much wrong with that situation, I don't know where to start. Sidewalk, Hummer, Sleep apnea, 1pm, Sunday....no word on any charges filed against the driver. Personally his drivers licence should be suspended indefinitely.

I wonder if it was a similar feeling as East Europeans watching on TV the higher standard of living of the West because of the inept government they had in place. I hope this continues to add pressure to the effort to revamp the city's streets to be more pedestrian and cyclist friendly. It was probably quite an eye opening experience to see all the commonsense solutions that other cities have successfully implemented to manage their traffic and transit issues.
